The 1960's

Differences:
Ponyboy thought to himself, "It seemed funny to me that Socs- if these girls were any example-were just like us.  They liked the Beatles and thought Elvis Presley was out, and we thought the Beatles were rank and that Elvis was tuff, but that seemed the only difference to me" (Hinton 37).

The Beatles = Liked by the Socs

Elvis Presley = Liked by the Greasers

Ponyboy thought to himself, "Man, that was a tuff car.  Mustangs are tuff" (Hinton 47).

Similarities:
Ponyboy stated, "It seemed funny to me that the sunset she [Cherry] saw from her patio and the one I saw from the back steps was the same one.  Maybe the two different worlds we lived in weren't so different.  We saw the same sunset" (Hinton 41).

Discuss with a partner: (Then please individually write your thoughts on the sheet of paper provided.)

What does Ponyboy say separates the Greasers from the Socs? Explain using examples from pages 38-43.
